CNC Minimum Feature Sizes
Practical limits for pocket width, hole depth, internal radii, and thin walls in machined parts.

Summary
Minimum features depend on tool diameter, reach, and material. A 3 mm end mill cannot cut a 2 mm pocket reliably.
1Pockets and slots
Minimum width ≥1.5× tool diameter; depth ≤4× tool diameter without special tooling.
2Internal radii
Match internal corners to available tool radii — smaller radii need smaller tools and longer cycle times.
3Thin walls
Aluminum walls below 0.8 mm and steel below 1.2 mm risk chatter and deflection.
Key points
- Pocket width ≥ 1.5× tool dia
- Align radii with standard tools
- Avoid ultra-thin walls without review
