3D scanning & reverse engineering

From a physical part to usable engineering data.

Plan scanning, point-cloud processing, reverse modeling and inspection around reproduction, redesign or dimensional comparison. Define how the data will be used before choosing capture and delivery.

Accuracy depends on size, material, visible surfaces, equipment and measurement strategy. Optical scanning cannot directly capture hidden cavities; inferred or patched areas must be distinguished from measurements.

Choose by project goal

Discuss a scanning project
01

Shape capture and digitization

Evaluate structured light or laser scanning for size, surface and site conditions. Multi-view registration, denoising and meshing create shape data; visibility and resolution limit detail coverage.

02

Reverse CAD modeling

Rebuild surfaces or engineering features from scan data. Distinguish preserving wear, recovering design intent and redesign. Critical fits need additional measurement or confirmation.

03

Dimensional comparison

Align measured data to reference CAD or agreed datums to evaluate deviations and specified dimensions. A color deviation map does not replace a measurement plan or acceptance decision.

02 / Explore deliverables

Define the deliverables

01

Point cloud · ASC / PLY

Discrete measured points. Agree units, coordinates, registration and density; confirm color or normal data in advance.

02

Triangle mesh · STL / OBJ / PLY

For shape archives, visualization or further processing. Agree closure, decimation, hole filling and texture separately. STL has no parametric features.

03

Rebuilt CAD · STEP / IGES

A separate reverse-modeling deliverable. STEP can carry surfaces or solids; IGES is commonly used for surface exchange. Native editable feature history requires a separate agreement.

04

Inspection report · PDF / tables

Agree reference-model revision, datums, alignment, measurements and decision rules. Confirm report scope and traceability requirements before starting.

Does scanning directly produce manufacturing-ready CAD?

Not automatically. Scans generally yield point clouds or meshes. Editable design CAD requires reverse modeling; manufacturing also needs review of material, dimensions, tolerances and process.

Four checks before scanning

01

Purpose and targets

Specify reproduction, redesign, archiving or inspection. Provide reference CAD, critical dimensions and target tolerances.

02

Sample and surface

Supply photos, size, material and quantity. Reflective, transparent or dark surfaces may need treatment; obtain owner consent before spraying, marking or cleaning.

03

Access and condition

Identify cavities, occlusion, disassembly permission, flexibility and wear. Discuss site conditions, shipping and sample protection.

04

Files and acceptance

Agree formats, units, coordinates, modeling depth, inspection scope and timing. Capture and post-processing effort both affect price.

From sample review to data acceptance

Discuss a scanning project
  1. 01

    Review the sample

Review photos and dimensions; confirm purpose, accessible areas and deliverables.

  2. 02

    Agree capture strategy

Define surface preparation, positioning, equipment and verification of critical dimensions.

  3. 03

    Process and reconstruct

Perform agreed registration, meshing, CAD reconstruction or deviation analysis; identify inferred areas.

  4. 04

    Verify and deliver

Check units, coordinates, revision and agreed items; deliver files and review acceptance feedback.

05 / FAQ

3D scanning & reverse engineering · Project questions

Accuracy depends on size, material, visible surfaces, equipment and measurement strategy. Optical scanning cannot directly capture hidden cavities; inferred or patched areas must be distinguished from measurements.

01Does scanning directly produce manufacturing-ready CAD?

Not automatically. Scans generally yield point clouds or meshes. Editable design CAD requires reverse modeling; manufacturing also needs review of material, dimensions, tolerances and process.

02Can you scan internal features or transparent parts?

Optical scanning needs visible surfaces and cannot see through a part into closed cavities. Transparent or reflective surfaces may require authorized preparation. Inaccessible areas need another measurement strategy.

03Can one accuracy value be guaranteed for every scan?

No. Equipment specifications are not final measurement uncertainty. Size, surface, registration, environment and verification determine project acceptance requirements.

04What information is needed for a quote?

Send sample photos, overall dimensions, material, quantity, purpose, reference model, critical dimensions, desired formats and schedule. Shipping or on-site capture is confirmed after review.
